Should you hike Devil’s Bridge? What the film settles

The four things people want to see before they commit.

The approach is easier than the photos suggest. From Mescal Trailhead, roughly two miles of the route is easy-to-moderate walking on dirt, sand and slickrock benches, with a wide, rutted stretch before the Devil’s Bridge Trailhead on FR 152. Nothing here needs hands. The preview shows the surface and the pace; the full film shows all of it.

The staircase is the whole decision. In the final tenth of a mile the trail turns into stacked natural sandstone steps, some knee-high and a few closer to thigh-high, where most hikers use a hand for balance. There is one short climb of roughly 15 to 20 feet from a rock shelf up to the bridge level. It is not technical, but it is a jarring change from the trail below. If you can manage a steep staircase with no railing, you can do it. Many hikers find the way back down more awkward than the climb; the film ends on the bridge and does not show the descent, so read the guide’s section on coming back down the staircase before you go.

You do not have to step onto the span. The bridge is about 50 feet high (Forest Service figure) and the usable surface narrows toward the photo spot. The ledge just before it, the profile overlook, gives the classic arch photo without walking onto it. Watch the eye-level footage of the walk out and decide for yourself; the guide covers what walking onto Devil’s Bridge actually feels like.

The real time sink is the photo line. On busy days we have sampled it at 30 to 45 minutes between 9 AM and noon. Starting around sunrise keeps the wait short and the staircase cool. Parking is the other variable: Mescal and Dry Creek Vista stay open to private vehicles on shuttle days, and Sedona Shuttle Route 11 serves both; the guide has parking fill times and which route to take.

Skip it, or stop at the profile overlook, if heights make you freeze, if the rock is wet, or if someone in your group cannot do a steep staircase without a rail. Is Devil’s Bridge right for you?
