The cairn navigation technique: When you reach a cairn on slickrock, stop. Look ahead for the next cairn before walking to it. The challenge: Over time, foot traffic polishes the rock surface in the correct line, creating a faint path of smoother, darker stone surrounded by rougher, lighter stone. Experienced Sedona hikers read this polish as a trail marker in itself — the rock surface tells you where thousands of feet have gone before. If the sandstone under your feet is noticeably smoother and darker than the surrounding rock, you’re on-route. If you step onto fresh, rough, unpolished sandstone, you’ve likely left the main line.


What to Do if You Lose the Trail

The moment you realize you don’t know where the trail is, the single most important action is to stop moving. Every step you take away from the trail makes the problem harder to solve. The instinct to keep walking “until something looks familiar” is the instinct that turns a 5-minute confusion into a 2-hour off-trail situation.

  1. Stop. Plant your feet. Put down your pack if you need to.
  2. Look behind you. Can you see the last cairn, trail sign, or obvious trail tread? If yes, walk directly back to it.
  3. Check your GPS track. If you’ve been recording your hike (you should be), your breadcrumb trail shows exactly where you came from. Follow it backward until you reach a point where you were clearly on trail.
