The quieter, vehicle-free route to Chicken Point — captured in first-person POV. A shaded first mile opens onto expansive slickrock and views of Twin Buttes, Bell Rock, and the red-rock corridor toward the Village of Oak Creek.
What the Trail Feels Like
Little Horse is USFS Trail #61 in the Coconino National Forest.
The trail starts off SR 179 near the Chapel of the Holy Cross and climbs westward. The first mile rolls through piñon-juniper woodland with modest red-rock glimpses — pleasant but not dramatic, and gentle enough to build confidence.
The second mile opens onto exposed slickrock where the canopy drops away and views expand rapidly. Navigation shifts from obvious dirt tread to scanning for cairns across bare sandstone. Near Chicken Point, Little Horse merges with the Broken Arrow route on shared rock — follow the tire marks and cairns toward the elevated platform.
For Jeep-free views, hike before 9 AM or after 4:30 PM, when the light is best and the tour vehicles haven’t arrived.
